There are many aspects to consider when purchasing firewood. There is the type of species to think about, the overall quality, the price and the moisture content.
When you purchase our firewood, we have already considered all of the above, to make sure that you get the best firewood for your money.
Birch
White birch is a common species that is found throughout the boreal forest. You'll recognize birch by the distinctive white, peeling bark. This is a high demand wood, because of how hot and clean it burns. However, purchasing and finding birch that is good to burn can be quite tricky. Birch needs to be dried for at least a year before it can be burned to its full potential. This is due to the fact that birch has a high sap content. Birch should be used only for heating because it is mildly toxic. Burning birch in your fireplace is a great option because it will not contribute to creosote build up in your chimney. Red Deer Firewood tries to get birch that is already dry, so that you can use it as soon as possible. However, we are always in the process of storing and drying out birch for future use.
Spruce
This is a dense, conifer that has a skinny, tapered trunk. You can pick these out by the green needles, the ones that give off that great "spruce smell" when the needles are crushed. This species of tree is found all over Alberta.
Spruce is thought to be a softer wood, and ideal to burn in a fireplace for heat because spruce burns evenly so you can control the heat a lot easier... so that you don't go from freezing cold to having a desert in your house!
Pine
Lodgepole pine is the most common pine tree that you see in Alberta. It is one of the hardiest conifers in Alberta. It easily endures our hard winters. Pine is a great wood to burn in a campfire because you will get great heat and that delightful crackling noise that provides that extra ambiance to make your night around the campfire that much better. And what is better than sitting around a campfire with a bunch of friends and a roaring campfire?
Aspen
Trembling Aspen is the a tree species that heavily populates Alberta. It is a species that grows fast and is really hardy, which is great for our climate. It is called a trembling aspen because the leaves will "tremble" in the wind.
Douglas Fir
This is an uncommon tree species in Alberta, and is mostly found in the Rocky Mountains. These trees have really thick and burly bark that is easily recognized. Since these trees have such thick bark, they are relatively resistant to fire. Douglas Fir is not a real fir tree, but in a category all by itself. This tree species also needs to dry for about a year, unless a dry standing douglas fir is cut. Then it needs about 6-8 months. For burning it is pretty decent. It gives off good heat, has a good burn time but will produce less ash than other species, such as birch. If you love to sit and watch the fire, this wood is perfect for that. It has a livelier flame than most other wood. As well, it has a great smell when burning.
BTU
Perhaps you have heard of the term BTU and you aren't sure what it means. BTU stands for the British Thermal Unit. A british thermal unit is defined by how much thermal energy is consumed when one pound of water is raised one degree. Various species produce different BTU amounts.
